What should be included in your free tree service estimate

You've responded to your local tree service's ad for a free estimate.  There seems to be so much ground to cover when in comes to your trees and their health.  Now, you're wondering, what do you get with a “free” estimate?

Typically, the person looking at your project is there in the role of tree service sales. I know plenty of good arborists that still try to give you their best advice, but you are relying on an individual arborist having the good will to talk you out of work that is not needed. Let's take tree pruning for example.  A good arborist will be able to write a clear and detailed tree pruning specification based on tree care best practices. Once you have a written specification for tree work, any arborist worth his salt should be able to write a tree care estimate that will be comparable with an estimate from other tree service providers.

There are best practices to be followed for every area of tree care.  These are guidleines that all professional tree services should follow when quoting jobs, recommending tree work and completing tree work.  The written specifications in the quote are the core of executing good tree work. Trees "R" Us, Inc. follows the Best Management Practice so that our clients can make good decisions for their trees and trust that they are getting the best possible advice.

For example, the best practices model for tree pruning would have a quote include all of the following:

~Clearly state which trees are to be pruned.
~Include a statement that all work shall be performed in accordance with the ANSI A300 pruning standard and the ANSI Z133.1 safety standard.
~Include clearly defined pruning objectives.
~Specify the pruning types to be performed to meet the objectives.
~State the size specifications of the minimum and/or maximum branch size to be removed.
~Specify the maximum amount (expressed as a percentage) of live tissue that can be removed.

This is just one example of a best practice quote.  Make sure your tree service follows the best practices of the industry before you hire them to complete your tree work.
