How to repair construction injury to trees when it is above ground

Construction injuries to trees happen above ground and under ground.  See yesterday's post if you need advice on how to recover from an underground injury.

If the construction injury to your tree has happened above ground, there are a few things you can do to help your tree recover.

The best thing you can do to your tree is make sure it is properly pruned.  If limbs have been broken by equipment, make sure the broken limb is cut off cleanly with a proper pruning cut.

Unfortunately, some trees will be beyond repair. If all else fails and there is no hope for maintaining a healthy tree, you should consider removal.  Tree removal can be costly, so check with your local tree service to ensure that the tree is a lost cause before you decide to remove it.  If the tree can be saved, the money you put into saving your tree will come back to you 10-fold.  Trees pay us back much more than we invest in them, so it is always best to try to save your tree than remove it if at all possible.

For both pruning and tree removal, you should contact a local tree service with an on-staff certified arborist. Pruning needs to be done correctly and removal is dangerous, so leave it to the pros.
