April's Tree Care Checklist

Did you get the March checklist done yet?  If you haven't read the checklist, check the previous post in the blog.  I outline everything you need to do to get your trees and shrubs ready for spring and summer and optimum health.

Now, it's time to get started on April's list.  The April tree care checklist isn't as long as last month's, but is equally as important.  Here what you should get done in the next few weeks.

  • Aerate and fertilize the lawn, use pre-emergent for weed control.
  • Spray for IPS.
  • Check for Aphids.
  • Remove Tree wrap from tree after mid- April
  • Plant summer flowering bulbs.
  • Apply Cambistat growth regulator.
On a side note, I realize you may have a few questions about this list.

IPS is a type of beetle.
Hundreds of thousands of beetles, called the Ips or engraver beetles, infest pine and spruce trees en masse completely overcoming the tree’s defenses. Water flow to the needles is disrupted, causing them to dry out. Spruce needles drop off green while pine needles fade to brown. Infested trees die within a single season.
Treatment consists of two simple applications. However, the spray used must reach the very top of the trunk. This can cause drift or migration across property lines. You and your neighbors must be aware of the treatment. Because of this drift, there may be trees that cannot be treated due to safety concerns.
Cambistat is the newest tree growth regulator with the active ingredient paclobutrazol. It is highly effective at reducing the growth rate of trees over a three year period, and thus is an excellent method of reducing tree maintenance costs. Extensive research and field trials have also shown that indirect effects on growth regulation can provide numerous health benefits for trees. By reducing the amount of energy allocated to shoot growth, more energy/carbon/substrates are available for other uses. Research has shown trees treated with Cambistat have the following responses: Tree growth rate is reduced between 40 – 60 % for three years with one treatment of Cambistat.

    • With Cambistat your tree will receive these benefits:
    • Root system enhancement
    • Improve drought and heat resistance
    • Higher tolerance to disease
    • Increase health and longevity
